Improving the design of a residential building using the Portuguese rating system SBToolPT
Construction affects all dimensions of sustainability (environment, society and
economy) and therefore a sustainable building design has to cope with tens of criteria, most of
them interrelated and partly contradictory. There are a great number of indicators and assessment
tools that have been developed recently in order to evaluate the sustainability of buildings
and urban settlements. Most of these tools are based on national standards, building codes and
local methods of construction. Sustainable design of construction is only possible through a real
methodological work. Sustainability assessment tools play an important role at this level, since
they convert the sustainability issues into tangible goals while are used to collect and communicate
the results of a sustainability assessment. This paper will present the role of the Portuguese
Sustainability Rating System SBToolPT in promoting the sustainability of residential buildings.European Science Foundation
Sustainable housing with mixedweight strategy : a case study
Prova tipográfica (In Press)The aim of this research work is to demonstrate how an innovative mixedweight solution can lead to achieve more sustainable housing constructions, having in mind that functional aspects related with comfort - thermal, acoustical and natural illumination should be safeguarded. The integrated accomplishment of all these aspects is difficult and not easily predictable. That’s why, for this comparative study, two Test Cells were built and monitored. The proposed mixedweight strategy was evaluated on a Test Cell made with a heavyweight central area, theoretically conceived to lodge the resting areas of a house - bedrooms, bathroom and living room. North and South envelope façades, pavement and covering are lightweight and lodge the less protected areas, destined for working (office, dining room and kitchen) and a corridor / sunspace, respectively. These compartments also take the role of thermal and acoustical barriers to the resting zone. This mixedweight strategy allowed to significantly less environmental cost in comparison to a conventional heavyweight constructive solution using hollow brick and steel reinforced concrete evaluated on a Reference Test Cell and conceived in a monozone layout. The main aspects and results of this study are presented here.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)
Sustainability assessment of an affordable residential building using the SBTool PT approach
This paper will present the sustainability assessment of an affordable residential
building block using the SBTool PT – H approach. This building block resulted from a cooperative
housing project that fulfils some of the priorities of high-performance and low environmental
impact buildings and is internationally recognised as a good example of a sustainable
project. The aim of this study is to verify the usefulness of the SBToolPT approach in promoting
sustainable buildings that have lower life-cycle costs when compared to conventional ones
LCA database for portuguese building technologies
The aim of this paper is to present one solution to integrate more accurate environmental
assessment methods in rating systems and that could be used to support the design
teams’ decisions that aim the implementation of low impact building solutions. The solution is
the development of a LCA database that is based in the EPD’s (Environmental Product Declarations)
approach and that gathers the quantification of several environmental impact categories
of the most common building solutions used in Portugal. This database is in continuous update
and now covers about 50 building solutions for floors and exterior walls, 40 building materials
and the impacts related to the use of 12 systems for acclimatization and hot water
Some considerations about the contribution of roller shutters positions to noise insulation of façades
This paper describes an experimental study on the evaluation of the influence of roller shutters positions on noise insulation of façades. The study is based on the results of a set of tests carried out in laboratory, and in situ using the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors of a selected new housing building which is typical of Portuguese cooperative construction. For the purpose a specific type of window was considered. The window system (glazing and frame, plus the roller shutter) was firstly characterized in laboratory. In situ, the tests were performed in 2 different rooms having different window dimensions. The measurements were done in accordance with what is prescribed by international standards, using a loudspeaker as noise source. The considered shutters positions were: totally opened, half closed, partially closed (shutter extended) and completely closed (shutter fully extended).
Additionally, in situ measurements with the window open were also done. The results have shown that the façade transmission loss curve related to each shutter position at the same storey and between different floor levels differs with some significance. Other interesting and important conclusions were extracted from the study done, namely: i) the important influence of shutter position when the window is open; the discrepancy between laboratory and in situ sound insulation performance; the low influence of flanking transmission regarding façades performance, which is due to its weak sound insulation when compared to those of the adjoining elements; and, finally, the evolution of sound insulation in frequency domain for the set of combinations window open and closed versus shutter positions.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Comparative assessment of exterior walls construction solutions’ sustainability
In this document a methodology for the comparative sustainability assessment of construction solutions will be approached. This work intends to be a contribution for the Con-struction in order to turn this industry more compatible with the sustainable development aims. The presented methodology will be applied to some conventional and non-conventional exterior walls construction solutions in order to find, inside the sample, the most sustainable solution.(undefined
Functional assessment of lightweight construction solutions in view of sustainability
The amount of waste produced every year, the exhaustion of resources and the construction solutions currently used on construction may not be sustainable in the future. All these issues lead to the research of new construction techniques, the recycling of waste into use-ful materials, the re-use of construction materials, etc. Most of the new and innovative solutions arise from the general feeling that something should be done to change the conventional way of construction in order to give an answer to current society concerns: the reduction of energy con-sumption, the minimization of pollution problems, the maximisation of the use of renewable and/or recyclable materials, etc. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potentialities of using more lightweight construction solutions with respect to functional comfort criteria (thermal, acoustic and visual comfort) and to assess the relative merits of this type of construction in view of maximising sustainability. Beyond the structural behaviour of a building the demand of a bet-ter habitat requires also a good performance in terms of serviceability. In this work the perform-ance of lightweight construction solutions (optimized for reducing environmental impact) and conventional construction solutions were compared under the energy costs point of view (con-struction and heating). The acoustic performance was also studied, but just in order to achieve similar conditions, thus becoming not relevant to the purpose of this study.
A ComissĂŁo Europeia
Deste modo, poderĂŁo surgir no
